Little league football now signing up for 2012 season

Central Oklahoma Little League Football, Inc (COLLF) is now taking sign-ups for the 2012 Guthrie Youth Football Season.

Guthrie is a member of the Deep Fork Valley Football Association, and as such, cannot begin holding organized practices until July 30th, 2012, but based on a major change in structure, early interest and sign-ups will be critical.

Along with player sign-ups, COLLF directors are accepting volunteer coaches.

The major change proposed by the COLLF board of directors is to expand Guthrie into a two-team participant in the Deep Fork Valley Association. Guthrie participated last year as a one-team entrant that is one single team for each grade level 2-6. With a very limited sign-up period last season partially due to the tornado-shortened school year, Guthrie was still able to easily fill rosters for one team in each grade, and in some cases, those rosters were overfull. The COLLF board of directors believes that with this early sign-up drive, coupled with increased awareness in the schools both here and in the other areas of the County, that filling out two complete rosters per grade is probable.

“The driving factor in wanting to expand the league is simply to increase participation in football in Guthrie,” Guthrie’s coordinator Seth Robbins said.

Their hopes are that they can have a minimum of 32 kids sign up per grade, resulting in a minimum of 16 players per team. Complicating the entire situation is the fact that the Deep Fork Valley League will require Guthrie to enter two teams in every grade, or they will be forced to go back to a one-team association. Deep Fork has put a hard deadline of July 1st on the Guthrie association to let them know whether we will be participating with two squads per grade or just one. Because of the time-frame, they hope to have sign-ups ready by Spring Break.

“Despite the overwhelming success of our high school football team, their participation numbers continue to decrease which is cause for alarm for anyone interested in seeing Guthrie continue being a 5A Football power going forward. It is the hopes of everyone involved with COLLF, that we can keep the pipeline full of talented football players to send to GHS,” Robbins said.

Some info on the league itself: 1st & 2nd graders can both participate on the 2nd grade team. The other teams are strictly for each grade, 3rd thru 6th. The home games are held at the Guthrie High School practice field. The season runs about 10 weeks up until the first of November.
