Logan County Emergency Management schedules camp safety workshop ahead of new state requirements

Logan County Emergency Management is asking camp operators and outdoor program organizers to attend a Nov. 20 workshop to prepare for new Oklahoma safety requirements and a Jan. 1, 2027, compliance deadline.

The informational workshop will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office Training Center, 219 S. Broad in Guthrie.

Registration is requested by emailing Shaga@logancountyso.org.

House Bill 1675 took effect Nov. 1 and establishes emergency preparedness requirements for camp facilities, youth camps, outdoor programs and recreational campgrounds. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management identifies Jan. 1, 2027, as the deadline for required hazard assessments and emergency action plans.

Local emergency management officials want to reach operators throughout Logan County who may be affected, including those responsible for sports camps, summer camps, overnight and day camps, wilderness programs, adventure camps and temporary event camping.

The workshop will provide guidance on developing site-specific hazard assessments and emergency action plans. Operators will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the requirements and how to prepare their facilities and programs.

Under the law, covered camps and programs must identify applicable hazards and establish emergency procedures. Plans must address evacuation routes, shelter options, accountability for campers and staff, and communication and reunification procedures.

Camps and programs must maintain two independent methods of receiving severe weather alerts, including one that does not depend on cellular service. Additional requirements include annual staff training, periodic emergency drills and disclosure of potential hazards and emergency procedures to participants.

The law also requires recreational campgrounds to maintain emergency action plans addressing natural disasters and severe weather, with evacuation routes and methods for issuing alerts. Those plans must be filed with the local emergency management agency and updated annually.

Logan County Emergency Management is encouraging residents to share the workshop announcement with anyone who owns, operates or manages a camp, campground or outdoor recreation program.

Officials hope the outreach will help local operators understand their responsibilities and have emergency procedures in place before the compliance deadline.
