Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson announced Shurlyn Maltz as the Secondary Teacher of the Year and Belinda Stone as the Elementary Teacher of the Year. After the finalists were introduced, Simpson opened the envelope and proclaimed Maltz as the District Teacher of the Year.

Maltz teaches mathematics at Guthrie Junior High School.

“Being selected as Teacher of the Year (TOY) is humbling considering the many great teachers who were also nominated, not to mention the incredible staff that I collaborate with at the Junior High on a daily basis,” Maltz said.

“An awesome teacher nominated me for the TOY and strongly encouraged me to apply as it was my responsibility to do so. Thanks, Kathy Ice!  It is an honor to represent such good people and be supported by my administration, Doug Ogle and Robbie Rainwater.”

Supt. Dr. Mike Simpson collected donations from local merchants to honor the district’s top teacher. Gifts include gift certificates, pottery, Thunder shirts, goodie baskets, floral arrangements, monetary donations, use of an SUV for one month in the summer and a one night stay and dinner in Oklahoma City.

“The gifts that were so generously given in honor of TOY were unexpected and overwhelming! My dining room table is overflowing with everything from a certificate for a month-long personal use of a SUV to a beautiful piece of hand-made pottery,” Maltz said.

“Some gifts were from new business, but others, like the Wade Family, have offered rewards to our district for decades. The support of our local business, big and small, is meaningful and much appreciated by all teachers.”

Maltz was overwhelmed with all the support she has received and knows education is where she wants and needs to be.
“Having been in the classroom for 20 years now, it was touching and rewarding that so many former students and colleagues reached out with kind words to me after seeing the post on Guthrie News Page.”
“I am greatly blessed by a wonderful husband, Jeff, and two tremendous sons, Conan and Zane, who support me in my career. I feel like teaching is my calling not my “job.” My goal in the mathematics classroom is to produce problem solvers not just problem workers because life is not a textbook.”
