Man attempts to steal truck with child inside; officer needs stitches in head

A suspect sits in jail after he is believed to have attempted to take off in a truck with a child inside. The scene took place at a Guthrie convenience store and resulted in a Guthrie police officer having to receive stitches in his head.

TruckTheftTwo friends arrived at a gas station, located in the 2300 block of E. Oklahoma Ave, in two separate vehicles shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday. According to witnesses, the male friend parked behind his females friend’s car at the gas pumps and got out to begin to put fuel in the women’s vehicle. The suspect, Robert Bell, 28, of Woodward allegedly attempted to take off in the truck with the victim’s child still inside.

The male victim and others at the station worked together to stop Bell from taking off and were able to gain control of Bell to the ground. Once officers arrived to the scene, Bell, again, began to resist and eventually led to the officer suffering a head wound.

Guthrie EMS treated the officer at the scene, but went to the hospital to receive stitches. He was discharged and returned back to his shift.

Bell was arrested for assault and battery, attempted larceny of an automobile, attempted kidnapping, resisting arrest and assault and battery.

In court on Thursday, Bell was charged on three counts, including assault and battery on a police officer, larceny of a vehicle and assault and battery. he was given a $100,000 bond.
