Mercy Hospital Logan County to renovate existing surgical unit

Mercy Hospital Logan County confirmed plans this week to renovate its existing surgical unit and is working to resume surgeries and endoscopic procedures by late 2016/early 2017.

In February, the hospital temporarily stopped scheduling surgeries in order to be in compliance with current Oklahoma State Department of Health requirements. Over the past few months, Mercy leaders have evaluated the best use of hospital resources, which included updating the space or creating a surgery center in another location, and decided to pursue the renovation project.

Mercy has pledged $2.3 million for the renovation.

“We are looking forward to renovating our surgical unit so our patients can once again get their surgeries and endoscopic procedures from our highly skilled group of surgeons and providers close to home,” said Josh Tucker, administrator of Mercy Hospital Logan County.

The renovated 4,900-square-foot surgical unit will feature:

* An operating room for surgical procedures, including general, orthopedic, urological, gynecological, ophthalmic, podiatric and ear, nose and throat surgeries

* A procedure suite for endoscopic, bedside and pain management procedures. Bedside procedures include services like lumbar punctures and the removal of fluid from growths and in the space between the lungs and the chest wall. Pain management procedures include epidurals, nerve blocks and joint injections, among others.

* A post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) that will include a private suite to care for pediatric and adult patients recovering from anesthesia

* Five private pre-operative and post-operative patient rooms

* A new, state-of-the-art clean processing room to sterilize all equipment

* A surgery waiting room for family members and friends of patients

* Redesigned hallways to maximize patient privacy for surgical services

The unit will also feature the latest surgical equipment and technology, like new operating tables, new processors for sterilizing equipment and new endoscopy equipment, including scopes and monitors for gastrointestinal procedures.

Tucker said he is thankful for the community’s support of the hospital and patience as they have developed their surgical plan over the past several months. Mercy leaders will share more details about the surgical services in the coming months.
