Meridian Technology Center offers free adult GED and HiSet test prep classes in Guthrie

STILLWATER, Okla. – Guthrie residents who want to earn their high school equivalency credentials are able to take classes close to home.

Meridian Technology Center offers free High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation classes to all district residents, including a local training option in Guthrie. These classes prepare individuals for the GED and HiSet tests.

“Meridian’s mission is to educate, enrich lives and secure economic futures for district residents. Helping adults earn their GED or HiSet credential is a critical step in that mission. A GED or HiSET is equivalent to a high school diploma and can open the door for students applying for a job or seeking further education,” explained Jennifer Tressler, Adult Education Instructor/Coordinator at Meridian Technology Center.

Meridian offers GED and HiSet prep classes in Guthrie, Pawnee, Perkins and Perry in addition to classes on the school’s Stillwater campus.

Tiffany Biggs teaches the classes in Guthrie. Biggs teaches 7th grade math and high school geometry at Putnam City Public Schools during the day and the test prep at night. She has 14 years of classroom experience and is certified to teach early childhood, elementary, middle school math and English, algebra 1 and geometry.

The local classes are organized just like the classes offered at Meridian, Tressler said. “Students take a pre-test to determine their academic levels in math, reading and language. Based on their results, they study to advance to the next level and build toward taking the GED or HiSET. Prep classes are self-paced and offered at no cost.”

To prepare students to take the test, instructors give each student a pre-test to evaluate their current academic level. After the test, instructors work with the individual to create a custom plan to help advance their grade level equivalency. Students will attend classes that cover each of the testing areas where they need assistance. After a minimum of 40 hours of instruction, students will take a post-test to evaluate their success.

“Through the years, I have worked with students who have been able to come in, take the pre-test and then take and pass the GED or HiSet test. I have also worked with students who have needed several prep classes,” Tressler said. “In both situations, the goal is the same – to help these individuals get their high school equivalency diploma so they can have more opportunities available to them to better their life and their community.”

The GED and HiSet exams are broken into subject areas. The GED has four tests: math, science, social studies and language arts. The HiSet has five tests: math, science, social studies, reading and writing. The GED tests are $34 per subject or $136 for all tests. The HiSet exam is $97.50.

Guthrie classes are taught in the portable building behind the Guthrie Junior High School at 705 E. Oklahoma Ave.

The GED and HiSet preparation classes at Meridian are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening and in Guthrie on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. Free transportation to Meridian from a Meridian district high school is available for all afternoon classes. GED and HiSet classes are funded by state and federal funds through the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
