Drivers along S. Division Street in Guthrie will soon notice changes to how they enter and exit several businesses as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation begins installing bollards to improve safety in the heavily traveled area.
The work is taking place along Division Street near the entrances to Walmart, McDonald’s and Walgreens, an area that routinely sees significant traffic throughout the day.
The bollards will restrict several traffic movements that have contributed to concerns at the intersection.
Once the changes are in place, northbound motorists on Division Street will no longer be able to turn left directly into McDonald’s.
Motorists leaving Walmart from the south exit will also no longer be permitted to turn left onto Division St. Those drivers will be required to turn right and travel southbound.
The changes will also prevent motorists from attempting to travel directly across Division between the Walmart and McDonald’s entrances.
The area has been identified as a high-crash location, with one of the concerns involving motorists crossing the center yellow line while attempting to travel between Walmart and McDonald’s.
The installation of the bollards is designed to physically prevent those movements rather than relying solely on pavement markings or signage.
The traffic changes could require drivers to adjust their normal routes when entering or leaving the businesses, particularly during busy shopping and meal periods.
Motorists traveling through the area should use additional caution as the bollards are installed and become familiar with the new traffic pattern.
