Officer rescues woman from hotel restroom filled with smoke

Guests inside a Guthrie hotel were driven out of their beds late Friday night by the alarm system. As they made their way out, smoke could be seen coming from the bottom floor.

The Guthrie Fire Department was dispatched to the Holiday Inn Express on Highway 33 just after 10:30 p.m. for a woman trapped inside the bottom floor restroom with heavy smoke.

A Guthrie police officer was nearby when the call came out and was on the scene within minutes.

The officer made his way into the hotel and was able to kick the bathroom door open. Inside, he found the female through the heavy smoke. Luckily, both were able to get out with no injuries.

The fire department needed only a few minutes to extinguish the fire as hotel guests and workers waited outside.

According to a witness, the female, who was not a hotel guest, says she was being chased by an individual and a dog and ran into the bathroom to hide.

Once inside the bathroom, the female appeared to have set a roll of tissue on fire. It was unclear what led her to burn the tissue paper.

Police continue to investigate the case.

The female was taken from the hotel and transported to a Oklahoma City hospital for further evaluation.

There was minor damage reported in the hotel.

All guests returned to their room approximately a hour later as fire crews finished ventilating the smoke.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.
