Report: Guthrie Taco Bell employee hours cut due to Healthcare mandates

Bookmark and Share

One employee at the Guthrie Taco Bell tells a Oklahoma City television station that her hours, along with her co-workers, will be cut down due to the Affordable Care Act, or as she and many others call “Obamacare”.

Taco BellIn an interview with KOKH Fox 25, Johnna Davis, an employee with the store since September, said a store meeting was held and empoyees were informed of their hours being cut to no more than 28 hours starting in 2013 so that ownership could legally avoid the Care Act.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. The new legislation will require businesses with 50 or more workers to provide affordable health care for their employees starting in 2014 or pay a penalty of up $2,000 per worker. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees — that’s 96 percent of all companies, according to CBS, will be exempt. They won’t have to do anything.

Davis said she was told she would work enough hours to qualify for an insurance plan for her family, including three children, when she was first hired.

However, with the down grade to the part-time status, she will not be able to qualify for those benefits.

Several reports across the nation show similar signs such as the ownership team that runs the Guthrie Taco Bell.

The owner of Five Guys, with 10 New York franchises and 250 employees, told CBS News he’ll probably have to reduce the staff to some degree, and again, focus on building smaller stronger team rather than being as aggressive in opening up new stores and creating new jobs.

Treadwell Enterprises, out of Springfield, Missouri, not only operates the Taco Bell in Guthrie, but according to their website operates 9 other locations in the state, including Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Ruby Tuesday, and Hut Hot stores. In total, the ownership group works in 11 states.

Guthrie News Page contacted Treadwell Enterprises via phone and email on Monday morning on this report, but was informed the Human Resources contact was out of the office until Friday and the Controller was in a meeting. According to Fox 25, their calls and email were unanswered.

  1. Are people just now figuring this out? Omabacare is a job killer. Why hire more people if you will be penalized for it. You must stay small and lean to survive. Business owners can no longer try to grow with this government. Survival is the new goal, not growth.

  2. This is a sad case of a family trying to survive and can’t. I just wrote to President Obama, attached this article and asked, “What is this family and other families in this situation supposed to do? Are they supposed to now file for support through food stamps because their hours have been cut?” My brother has sold insurance for many years…now with the Obamacare, his job is gone. Dan correctly stated it when he said, “Obamacare is a job killer.” I hope to get a response from President Obama. Of course, it could be quite some time. However, when my students wrote to him, he did respond.

    • The families are supposed to become dependent on the government, this will ensure our dear leaders power. Many will have to vote for the Dems or risk loosing their new way of life that everyone else pays for.

  3. It’s only a job killer because these companies don’t want to take care of their employees!!! So they cut hours to avoid the LAW. That cuts bring home pay, people will quit to find new jobs and eventually these businesses will go bankrupt, not because of Obamacare…..but because they didn’t care!!! It’s such a terrible thing to force people to purchase healthcare insurance, but it isn’t a terrible thing to force me to pay for their care in higher premiums due to unreimbursed care?? I completely disagree.

Americans – 47% of you have to be the dumbest people on this planet earth. The only first world nation without a national health-care plan. Capitalist countries like Germany and Canada are kicking your asses while you worry about the “communism” of state funded health-care. When an employer dumps their employees or curtails their hours you blame the President – not the greedy pig multi-millionaires that run those operations who say they will be put in the poor house if they subsidize health care for their employees. Really. Man you people are stupid as the day is long.

  5. stupid calling stupid what a waste of space. Why not ask the Canadians or Europeans what they think of their “free health care” . . they hate it. ask a doctor or nurse if they are going to work for the government . . . most are opting out. Good luck finding a good doctor now. You deserve what you voted in. being the majority sure does not make you smart or right.
Good employers do take care of their employees and any intelligent person knows competitions lowers cost and government can not do anything within budget. “Obuma Care” will be the worst of the worst.
Good luck getting your entitlements when we stop creating jobs and there are no more tax payers to fund your lazy life style.

  6. Ok so? Exactly Dan! Don’t they know that Carl’s jr and taco mayo and others are doing it to us too? I’m just gonna go get a 2nd job. That chick sounds like a lazy, whiny baby!

So, instead of the outrage over treating an employee incorrectly, when the company has PLENTY of money, this turns into “IT’S ALL OBUMMERZ FAULT”? How about a boycott of Taco Bell? How about paying employees a livable wage? Healthcare shouldn’t be an “entitlement” as a previous poster called it. How is Quiktrip, a Tulsa owned company who takes better care of it’s employees than 99% of companies, including everyone reading this, staying afloat? Not just staying alive, but THRIVING! Quit blaming the government for trying to make your quality of life better, and start blaming greedy a-holes for destroying the American way of life. People of Guthrie, PLEASE stay away from Taco Bell. Mayo is better, Oklahoma owned, and takes batter care of it’s employees (not to mention a block away). Shop local and take some pride in your city. Or sit around and whine about Obama and see what happens, it’s up to you.

  8. Boycotting a business may seem like the answer but It could do much more damage. It could hurt all Employees. No business or customers could cause it to close and many employees will be laid off. These are hardworking parents, High students, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and children. Taco Bell isn’t my favorite Mexican Restaurant in Guthrie, I rather prefer Fuente, but protesting and acting out anger on the Guthrie Franchise employees is horrible. The employees here can pass on the message but don’t be rude to them. They are trying to survive and make it through life to pay their bills. Most everyone can make the choice to leave where they are working to find something new. Many businesses are cutting back hours right now. Show support to the employees not the company.

    • Exactly Frankie. All this girl has done is made it worse on the fellow employees she claims to care about so much.

      • Oh and there were a couple of magazines and some school papers of my kids in all that hoarding!!! Your a bright one!

@ Jerry…. The answer to your Quiktrip Vs. Taco Bell question is obvious to anyone who has ever run a restaurant of any type…. PROFIT MARGIN. Almost every item in a convenience store has a 500% mark up while taco’s are probably a 5% mark up. If you expect restaurants to thrive like a convenience store than you had better be ready to pay $3.25 for a basic taco!

  10. @jennifer good luck with the search for second job. And your welcome to your own opinion. I did this because I’ve looked for another job and been doing it for a month. It’s hard to find another job especially one that will work around the hours you work at your first job and take care of three kids by yourself. A lot of these businesses don’t want employees that are working at another fast food restraunt. I know that they have cut hours at several of the fast food restraunts in Guthrie. I hear from ppl on my Facebook everyday about others who are going through same thing. I did this because it’s horrible the way these companies are treating ppl. A good company takes care of its employees. There are companies all over that thrive even providing benefits. That’s because when you take care of your employees they take care of business. You can say I’ m lazy and just whining but who knows maybe this might do someone somewhere some good. You never know. And if you don’t like this story than don’t watch it.

  11. Also if anyone knows a lady named Linda she came in store today and talked to me asked me to call her pls let her know I tried but I didn’t write down last 2 numbers and so can’t contact her. I do know she drives a dark SUV.

    • maybe if YOU don’t like our responses, YOU shouldnt read hahahaha This is what your 15 minutes of “fame” is getting you sweetheart. revel in it whileyou can.

  12. Heres a better investigation of the story than 9news and fox25 have provided

  13. OOpS!!haha http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/08/taco-bell-obamacare_n_2433947.html?utm_hp_ref=food&ir=Food
Thank God someone in the News finally got more of the facts. Finally watched the video and from the looks of whats going on behind her, they should be doing an episode of Hoarders too..OH! guess she’s upset because less hours means she had to let her housekeeper go! hahaha Oh..no?? hahaha
And our manager told us that the main asst. mgr–Miles?–at the taco Bell went to all the places in town, including ours, to see if they could trade part time employees so if we wanted we could work at Taco Bell and our jobs and essentially keep out hours that way. Once again, investigative journalism at its best.

  14. I already got one–JOHNNNNNNA–hhaha but luck has nothing to do with it. its called get off your lazy butte, quit expecting people to hand you everything and go look. And im a good employee so they both work around my schedule because they say im WORTH it..maybe that is your problem. ive eaten there and you are probably one of the worst/rudest workers they have. its gotten around town you are quitting Taco Bell so you must have found another job? are you going to be full time? guess when push came to shove you were able to find something after all. actually, dont answer any of taht. I DONT CARE hahahaha

  15. Oh my gosh! rumor is she is going somewhere that doesnt employ enough people to have to offer healthcare!!!????WOW!!!!! way to stand up for the “little guy”!!!!!! hahahahahahahahaha
Sorry. Didnt start out trying to turn this into some crazy attack, but our town is really up in arms over this and its all because of this one person, and now she is quitting and going somewhere that might even be paying her under the table!! *smallTown *bigEars
Ok. That’s my last comment on all this ridiculousness.

    • It’s the same fucking story news 9 did! All you did was post the same story. And sorry having mail piled on my bar doesn’t constitute as hoarding. That is mail, a phone book and a phone maybe you need glasses! And your the one whining over something you have no control over. Ranting and raving about what I did. Trust me nothing has ever been handed to me. I’ve worked for everything. I finally figured it out your jealous because it wasn’t your 15 mins of fame. Oh my gosh I’m so sorry did I detract from your attention? My opinion is that people should stand up for what’s right and what was done was wrong. So I spoke up. And you don’t have to like it that’s your opinion. But don’t let me take away from your almost 15 mins of fame. And ps I did find another job and its full time above board. And no they don’t have health insurance. But they aren’t cutting hours either. So now I don’t need two jobs unlike you. And I found this job weeks ago.

      • What gets me is that this would have eventually happened anyways. This story would have eventually gotten out. So being mad about it happening now instead of in the future is pointless. Life goes on this wasn’t about 15 mins of fame it was a view that I had and an opinion that I had. And they just chose to air it. If you have another opinion feel free to tell it to them too. But regardless of all that this would have been on the news sooner or later. I am now stepping away from this whole conversation as all she has done is attack me. It’s pointless to argue about something that is done and over with. Good luck to everyone on here. I only wish everyone the best and thanks for sharing your opinions with me.

      • Johanna, this is a public place where everyone can post their opinions and read everyone opinions. However, please, for the courtesy of others, please refrain from using vulgar language.

    • I agree with you Jennifer. I’ve been through there many times and she is rude and seems lazy. So you have kids and may be a single parent. We learn to deal and do what we have to take care of them the best we can. We don’t exploit ourselves and throw others under the bus to do it. I also agree with Frankie, protesting a business that employs many of our family and youth will only hurt our youth. I think that Johnna is doing this for the attention. Didn’t she ask for the lady’s number who was offering a handout??? yeah must be nice to use your situation as a poor single mom to get things handed to you. You put all of us struggling single parents who work hard to shame!
