Rolling Thunder Book Bus returns to Guthrie with free books

After a successful trip a year ago, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Rolling Bus made a return stop at Mack’s 512 Academy delivering out books like a Kevin Durant game winning shot.

The Thunder have teamed up with American Fidelity Assurance Company for a program called “Read to Achieve” that provides new books to school children. The program is a great way to help the community and get great exposure.

The book bus visited Mack’s 512 Academy, 512 Triplett Road, Tuesday morning and gave out a brand new book to 37 students.  The book bus includes an inventory of at least 3,000 books for pre-school through fifth grade readers.

Cheryl Glover with Mack’s 512 Academy contacted the Thunder and booked the tour for the second straight year.

This converted school bus travels to schools, community centers, museums, parks and other sites throughout the year to promote reading and literacy. As of today, the bus has dispensed over 57,224 books on 732 appearances since the program started in 2009.

According to Glover, they offer community based after school and summer participatory prevention program. The center provides a safe, educational and fun environment for all youth in Logan County and surrounding areas.

The mission for Mack’s 512 Academy is to provide specialized educational programs and skills building concepts that will help students establish a successful approach to becoming competent, contributing, responsible, compassionate adults.

Their duty is to increase their exposure to constructive developmental activities and to instill in them values and resistance skill that will guide them from the inside. Their motto is “Giving Kids What They Need To Succeed” and that providing an educational program along with the asset building approach, that their children will encounter a significant increase in the number of successes they experience as they journey through school years into adulthood.
