School board approves classes at Willow Creek

The Guthrie Board of Education met Monday night for their regular scheduled meeting. The meeting represented the final one for outgoing Superintendent Terry Simpson.

Simpson opted out the final year of his contract and is set to retire after 38 years in education, including 18 years in Guthrie at the end of the month. Related story: Simpson announces he will retire following school year

The board approved (upon contract) the Willow Creek Health Care for Intergenerational Pre-K Program, which will house a classroom for one class in the morning and another class in the afternoon at the living center. Last school year, there were 10 Pre-K classes held at Cotteral school.

Other school districts, including Enid and Jenks, have seen success bringing the school children and the residents together at the living center.

The board named four principals and two assistant principals among other teachers and support personnel. Related story: Guthrie schools name principals for 2012-2013

In other board actions:

– Chad Wilson was approved to replace Sharon Herrington as designated representative of the Board of Education to conduct employee negotiations for the 2012-2013 school year.

– approved transportation request from First Southern Baptist Church for summer camp the weeks of July 16 and July 23, 2012

– approved to revise the District Policy C-21 Sanctioning of Student Activity Organizations

– approved a contract for Child Nutrition services for 2012-2013 with Southwest Food Service Excellence.

– awarded a bid to Jackson Mechanical Service, Inc. for Central Elementary boiler replacement for $31,910.00

– approved Temporary Appropriations for 2012-2013 for the General Fund, Building Fund, Child Nutrition Fund, School Age Care Fund, Gifts and Endowments Fund and Insurance/Casualty Fund

– approved the renewal with OSIG for property, general liability, fleet vehicle and errors and omissions coverage for 2012-2013

– approved renewal with OSAG for workers’ compensation insurance coverage for 2012-2013

– approved to re-establishment of Guthrie Bluejay Tennis Booster Club as an Activity Fund Account within Guthrie Public Schools

– approved the Jr. High School Student Handbook for 2012-2013

– approved the Guthrie High School/Faver Alternative School Student Handbook for 2012-2013

– approved an action upon agreement with MAX Teaching for staff development training for building principals on July 24, 2012

– approved upon agreement with Soliant Health for Speech Language Therapy services for Extended School Year

– approved upon agreement with Patricia Graham to provide Speech Language Services for 2012-2013
