Guthrie Public Schools held their regular scheduled Board of Education meeting on Monday evening. The school board announced a committee will overlook the possibility of arming school staff members with guns.

“It’s (discussions of arming staff) been very polarized. A very passionate debate,” Board President Terry Pennington said during his board member comments.

“I have decided to establish a committee because I don’t believe such an item with great weight should be looked lightly.”

Pennington announced himself, along with fellow school board members Travis Sallee and Janna Pierson will compromise the committee and will receive input from Supt. Dr. Mike Simpson, law enforcement officials, building administrators, teachers and the public.
The committee will have 60 days to compromise their report and return their findings back to the school board for consideration.
School officials discussed the recent release of the district’s A-F report card released by the State Department of Education, along with the drop out rate. Related story: Superintendent encouraged with recent A-F state report cards
