Just after 1 p.m., the semi-truck was travelling west on Highway 33 when it approached the traffic signals just east of the I-35 bridge. According to the driver, the brakes began to fail as he was approaching vehicles who were stopped at the traffic light.

To avoid colliding with the parked cars, the driver of the semi swerved onto the shoulder and attempted to get on the interstate’s on ramp. Instead, he rolled off the ramp, down a ditch causing the truck to land on its side.

One witness said they never saw the truck’s brake lights come on and that the truck was moving at a good rate of speed.

The impact caused the corn to liter the ditch with an estimated 1,000 bushels of corn. In some areas, the corn was knee-high deep.

Luckily the driver was able to crawl out from the truck and reported no injuries at the scene.

The ramp remained closed for approximately two hours until the truck was able to be removed from the ditch.
