Shaffer named Player of the Year for district; four Lady Jays earn honors

Post season honors are beginning to come in for the Guthrie softball program after a 20-13 season, including the district’s player of the year.

Bailey Shaffer, a four-year starter, was named the District (5A-4) Player of the Year in a district that features Guthrie, Carl Albert, Durant, Shawnee, McAlester, Bishop Kelley, Edison Prep and Tulsa Memorial. Each coach from the schools selected the teams.

Shaffer finished the season strong at the plate and finished with a batting average of .537while adding seven home runs in her season campaign. She was also named to the first team All Region team at third base and becomes a candidate for All-State consideration.

Trista LeGrande, a junior, was named to the district’s outfield first team. Seniors Chelsey Watson and Kaycie Carroll were named to the second team.

Watson claimed the honor at first base and Carroll took one of the six outfield spots.
