Updated on June 12, 2024 — According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Manuel Alaniz, 51, shot and killed his wife, Catalina Jimenez, 43, before taking his own life.
Guthrie News Page was the first to report the incident that occurred just after 8 a.m. outside a residence in the 3400 block of Wildwood Road. Jimenez was at the location to pick up a coworker when Alaniz arrived, pulling up behind her vehicle. He exited his car and fired two shots into the driver’s side, fatally wounding Jimenez.
Sheriff Damon Devereaux provided details at the scene of the harrowing event, noting that after shooting Jimenez, Alaniz moved to the passenger side where Jimenez’s coworker was seated. Fortunately, the coworker managed to escape unharmed.
“The passenger was able to get out at that point in time,” Devereaux stated. After the coworker fled, Alaniz turned the gun on himself, dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The coworker was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Devereaux expressed empathy for the survivor, stating, “I’ve never been in a situation like that, but I can’t imagine the terror she would be feeling of being involved that close to something like that. I’m sure she felt like her life was about to end.”
The Sheriff’s Office revealed that the couple had a troubled history, marked by domestic-related incidents. Alaniz had previously been arrested for domestic violence against Jimenez. Court documents indicate he was charged with two counts of domestic abuse by strangulation in November 2023. Following this, Jimenez secured a protective order against Alaniz, which remained in effect at the time of her death.
Investigators also disclosed that the couple’s young child was inside the home during the shooting but was not harmed.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist with the crime scene investigation, ensuring all aspects of this tragic case are thoroughly examined.
