Update: The Lady Jays needed two wins against one of the elite softball programs in the state, but fell short in the first game, on day two of regional play, with a 10-0 loss to McAlester.

McAlester punched their ticket to the state tournament on their home field and will enter state with a 31-7 record while Guthrie ends their season at 14-23.

McAlester Regional on Day One

The Guthrie Lady Jays have put themselves in position to try to make the Class 5A State Softball Tournament next week by collecting a win on day one of regionals, in McAlester, Wednesday afternoon.

Guthrie never trailed in a 12-4 win over the No. 2 seeded team Tulsa Edison in the first game of the McAlester Regional. Tulsa Edison (17-8) was then eliminated by the host team in a rout, 17-0, in the second game. In the third and final game of the day, the Lady Buffalo’s held the Guthrie bats in check and walked away with a 7-0 win.

The Lady Jays go back to McAlester, on Thursday, needing to beat the state’s third ranked team twice to advance to state. First pitch is set for noon. McAlester is now 30-7 on the season and with the split Guthrie is now 14-22 on the season.

Normally all regionals are a four team regional, but Tulsa Central was unable to comprise a team to compete, so in turn McAlester received a first round bye.

Guthrie jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, but Edison got back within two runs with a score in the second. The Lady Jays pushed across another run in the third to go back up 4-1.

Edison in the top of the fourth inning hit the Lady Jays for two runs to make it a 4-3 game.

The score would remain the same until the home half of the fifth inning when Guthrie put two more runs on the board, but again Edison scratched one more in the sixth to make it a 6-4 game.

Brian Jackson’s Lady Jays, however, put the game away with six huge runs in the sixth to put the game away as Edison went quietly in the last inning.

In the final game of the day, McAlester got two runs in the first, one in the fifth, and four in the sixth to separate themselves from the Lady Jays.
