What is old is new again this year for the Guthrie 89er Days Celebration with the addition of a 5k Stake Your Claim Run.
The run is set for Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in downtown Guthrie. The race replaces the old 89er Day run which was a staple of the celebration for a number of years before being disbanded.
Mac Davis with Guthrie Entertainment, LLC said his group decided to start the run again as a way to get the community more involved with the celebration. He said the race is also serving as a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network and the Toby Keith Foundation.
“When Guthrie officials approached us about taking on the old 89ers day run, we thought it would be a good opportunity to give back to Guthrie since they have been so supportive to us in or other local ventures of first “Guthrie Haunts Scaregrounds” haunted house, which we hold throughout October and then our Zombie Bolt 5k event we hold in Guthrie in early October as well,” Davis said. “We chose to give the run a new name and chose the “Stake your claim 5k” name and to involve the community more. We have asked local merchants to donate small prizes for the runners to receive as “claims” at the end of the race, which has been very successful with lots of merchant support.”
Davis said about 87 runners have signed up and they are expecting over 120 runners to participate.
Cost of the event is $27.50 for adults and $20 for youth, which includes a t-shirt with the race logo on front & sponsors on back. Shirts are on a first-come basis.
“We are looking forward to making the Stake Your Claim 5k run a big part of the 89ers Day festivities for years to come with the great support of local merchants and citizens of Guthrie and the surrounding communities,” Davis said.
