Stevenson paces seventh grade Jays over Enid 38-34

The Guthrie seventh grade football team was back on their home turf needing a win after starting the season 0-2. Quarterback Kaiden Stevenson made sure the losing streak came to a halt.

Stevenson accounted for 24 of the team’s 38 points and turns out the Jays need all those points with a 38-34 back-and-forth win over Enid on Thursday evening.

Guthrie got going quickly.

On the first play of the game, Josh Rains connected with Zane Haynes on a half back pass for 33 yards. On the next play, Stevenson scampered for 27 yards and followed that up with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Three plays, 63 yards in a 1:13 and the Jays led 8-0 after Stevenson ran in the 2-point conversion.

Enid on their first offensive drive was marching, but a Plainsmen pass floated in the air and Stevenson came away with an interception near midfield.

The Jays needed five plays to go 58 yards, highlighted by a Stevenson 51-yard run, and was capped off with a 2-yard touchdown run by Rains. Hanes scored on the two-point try and the Jays were out to 16-0 lead after the opening quarter.

Enid would not go away.

The Plainsmen scored on the following drive with a 41-yard score and turned that around with another score after a Guthrie fumble. Both two-point tries were unsuccessful and the Jays lead was down to 16-12.

After the kickoff, Guthrie needed one play to find the end zone.

Stevenson delivered a nice pass to a wide-open Rains streaking down the middle of the field as Rains ran the ball in for a 53-yard touchdown. The Bluejays went up two scores 22-12.

However, Enid had a response just before the half.

The Plainsmen took advantage of a roughing the passer penalty to set them up at the 3-yard line with seven seconds left in the half and scored on a touchdown toss. With the successful two-point conversion, Guthrie went into the locker room leading 22-20.

Enid erased their 16-0 deficit and took their first lead on the first play of the third quarter with a nifty 74-yard run by the Plainsmen running back, who at times was difficult to bring down.

Much like Enid, Guthrie responded with a score on their opening second half drive.

Rains found the end zone on an 11-yard run to cap off a 60-yard drive. Stevenson added the two-point conversion to give the lead back to the Jays 30-26.

Back came Enid with a 13-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to regain the lead at 34-30 with 5:10 left in the game.

The final and winning score for the Jays came just over two minutes later.

Stevenson found an edge and scored on a 14-yard touchdown run. The drive was highlighted by a Rains 29-yard reception to the Enid 18-yard line.

The Guthrie defense stopped Enid on their final drive on five downs to secure the win.

Eighth grade Bluejays shut-out by Enid

The eighth grade Guthrie team fell to Enid 22-0 on Thursday evening.

The Jays could not get going offensively on the entire night and was limited by the Plainsmen to get any momentum going.

Enid led at halftime 8-0 before finding the end zone two more times in the second half.

With the loss, the Jays fall to 1-2 on the season.

The junior high teams will now begin a stretch of four games on the road beginning with Ponca City on Sept. 24.
