Students back in the classroom for a new school year

Monday began the first full week of the school year for the Guthrie school district after getting started last Friday.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson, who is now in his fifth year in the leadership role, said the first day was the “smoothest start” he has been a part of.

Like years past, the first day of school saw a high traffic volume with parents dropping students off for the first day. To add congestion to the city streets, the traditional senior escort from the Masonic Temple to the high school – led by the Guthrie Police Department – was detoured to Oklahoma Ave to Wentz St. due to Pine St. being closed for sewer line replacement.

“We had very few buses running late. Their tardiness was undoubtedly caused by the high volume of parents who take their child to the first day of classes as well as the traditional senior parade,” Simpson said

Simpson went on to give thanks to the transportation department.

“I want to applaud the GPS Transportation Department on their upfront work to provide such a smooth start.”

With the start of school this morning, the entire central office administrative team performed their customary tour of all buildings.
