Grant approved to allow reality walking tour of downtown district

The City of Guthrie announced the Community Development department has been approved to bid a project with the goal of creating an augmented reality walking tour of historic downtown Guthrie.

City officials says the project is funded in part by a $12,000 federal grant through the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office’s Certified Local Governments Fund administered from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The tour will document information of the history and development of least six but possibly as many as twenty of the buildings or structures within the Capital Townsite Historic District. Once bids have been collected and awarded, work is scheduled to be completed by June of 2017, and will include both high and low-tech versions of the app as well as a corresponding map and hard-copy guide for walking tours.

The goal of the project is to increase visitor and youth engagement in learning and appreciating Guthrie’s heritage and to increase recognition of the importance of preserving it for future generations through the use of technology.
