Two structure fires on Friday stop just short of reaching homes

Quick action by neighbors, Guthrie police officers, and firefighters helped prevent two separate structure fires on Friday from spreading to nearby homes.

The first fire was reported just before 5:30 a.m. near Washington Avenue and Oak Street. When Guthrie police officers arrived, they found a detached garage fully engulfed in flames. Officers worked to protect the nearby residence until Guthrie firefighters arrived and brought the fire under control, preventing the flames from reaching the home.

A second structure fire was reported just before 5:30 p.m. on Cristina Drive, just off Sooner Road. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing from two structures located behind a residence. It was not immediately clear what the backyard structures were being used for, but firefighters were able to stop the fire before it spread to the nearby home.

In both incidents, neighbors were the first to spot the fires and quickly called 911, allowing emergency crews to respond before the fires could cause more extensive damage.

No injuries were reported in either fire. The causes of the fires have not yet been released.
