Tyler PorterGuthrie High School was well represented in the second and final round for the All-State Honor Band with nine students attempting to reach the elite level. Senior Tyler Porter was the lone BlueJay to earn the prestigious honor.

On Dec. 6, nine students from GHS competed at Westmoore High School after qualifying at the Nov. 8 first round. Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 from all over the state competed in each round.

Porter, who is an academic All-State candidate, earned the honor in the trumpet competition. The instrument is a highly competitive category and the recognition is well-earned.

“We are very proud of all of our students who audition each year, especially Tyler, for all the work he put in to this endeavor,” GHS Band Director Rob Blackburn said.

Porter, the son of Casey and Laura Porter, will now travel to Tulsa for the OMEA State Music convention in January to rehearse and perform with this band. The performance will be Saturday, Jan. 24 in the Performing Arts Center in downtown Tulsa.

Porter was selected by the Edmond Elks as the “Outstanding Junior of the Year” and attended Boys State in May. He is also a member of the Junior ROTC and golf, cross country and track teams. He plans on attending OSU’s College of Engineering next fall.
