The Guthrie offense started it all, the special teams filled in the gaps and the Bluejays defense finished it all Thursday night in Piedmont. The Jays improved to 4-0 overall on the season with a 37-9 win to begin district play.
On Wednesday afternoon, Guthrie and Piedmont school officials moved the game up a day due to potential heavy rains and flooding.
Coming off a bye week, the Bluejays scored in a variety of ways, running, passing, field goals and defensive scores. In total, the Jays offense produced 18 points, special teams added 13 and the defense added six.
Guthrie stormed out on their opening drive by going 75 yards in just seven plays. Senior quarterback Jackson Waddell scored from eight yards out.
The less than three-minute drive was highlighted on a great read, pass option play when Waddell spotted Marcellus Owens for a quick pass resulting in 39 yards.
Senior David Vargas proved why he among the elite in state – when it comes to kickers – with his kickoffs, punts and field goals. He connected on all three of his field goal attempts of 35, 25 and 37 yards.
Vargas’ 35-yard field goal gave the Jays a 10-0 lead after quarter one.
The field goal was setup by one of four Piedmont turnovers.
Guthrie pushed the score to 17-0 after Waddell, again, spotted Owens after the defense forced Piedmont over on downs.
With all day to throw, Waddell lifted a 40-yard pass down field to Owens, who leaped over two defenders, hauled in the catch and out sprinted the defense for the final 40 yards for the 73-yard touchdown score.
Piedmont scored their lone score touchdown midway through the second quarter with a 2-yard run by Colby Matlock. The two-point try was no good.
Both offenses could stabilize drives in the second half, but the Jays were able to get into field goal range where Vargas delivered to up the Jays lead 23-6.
Following a Piedmont field goal, 23-9, Waddell showed off his speed as he took off for a 71-yard touchdown run to secure the win.
However, the Guthrie defense was not done.
Leading 30-9 and Piedmont deep in their own territory, linebacker Cade Whitfield jarred the ball loose with a hit on the quarterback, David Scott scooped the ball and ran in for the 15-yard touchdown.
The Jays defense has now created 18 turnovers in the first four games on the season and has converted nine of those into scores.
Guthrie finished with 378 yards of offense with Waddell finishing with 154 passing yards, 119 rushing and three total scores.
The Bluejays return home Friday when they host Guymon for Homecoming.
