Watch: Guthrie Football travels to Shawnee to begin 2021 season

Updated on Aug. 28 — Guthrie defense nearly perfect in 33-0 season opening win

The Guthrie Bluejays begin the season with a road trip to Jim Thorpe Stadium for a showdown with the Shawnee Wolves.

You can watch the game right here on Guthrie News Page, or on the Guthrie News Page YouTube page.

In addition, you can listen to the game on 93.7 FM KSPI beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show and the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Both teams are coming off first round playoff wins a season ago and are carrying those same expectations into 2021.

The Jays will showcase sophomore quarterback Hayden Calvert, who found playing time a year ago as a freshmen in the playoffs, as he takes over the signal calling duties. Calvert will look to benefit with a solid running game led by junior back Isiah Hammons.

Hammons accounted for almost 700 yards to go with 10 touchdowns in 2020 and is coming off a strong performance in Guthrie’s only scrimmage with Bishop Kelley and Lawton.

Guthrie’s defense, as expected, looks to shut down their opponent’s running game with a solid defensive line and linebackers, including seniors Chris Shaputis and Spade Pool leading the way.

The defense — and special teams — will be challenged right out of the gate with Shawnee’s Jaylon Orange and offensive line. Orange accounted for 1,600 yards as a junior and 22 touchdowns. The Jays must know where he lines up at all times.
