The Guthrie BlueJays will be double-digit favorites when they return home and host the Ada Cougars. Then again, the Jays were a big favorite a season ago and escaped Norris field with a six-point win.
The BlueJays (4-0) will look to remain perfect when they host the 2-2 Ada Cougars inside Jelsma Stadium. Both teams enter with a 1-0 district record.
A Guthrie win would also mark the 100th win for head coach Rafe Watkins as the BlueJay head coach. The ball coach, currently in his 11th season, has compiled a record of 99-28 for the Jays.
The Cougars have won their last two games after dropping their first rival games to start the season with a 28-0 setback to Ardmore in week one and in week two against McAlester 59-34. Ada has outscored U.S. Grant and Southeast by a combine score of 99-6.
Despite 73 yards and not scoring on offense, Ada got a Mason Girdley 83-yard kickoff return to send last years game into halftime 13-7 as neither team was able to score in the second half. However, the Jays had three empty trips after being inside the Ada 10-yard line.
This season Ada has proven to be a balance offense by rushing for 141 yards and 149 yards through the air for a total offense of 290 a game. Despite not scoring in the first game, Ada is averaging 33 points.
Junior quarterback Wyatt Robson returns this season and has thrown 597 yards on 37-of-66 passing to go along with one touchdown toss and four interceptions.
Robson’s favorite targets have been juniors Easton Pingleton and John Stout. Pingleton has 328 yards with a team high 17 catches while Stout has nine grabs for 101 yards.
Ada’s running game will once again depend on senior Nathan Blakely and the junior Girdley. Both should see the same amount of carries as they have this season, but Blakely could be called upon more with his six rushing scores, including four last week over Southeast.
The Cougars offense will be challenged by the quick and physical BlueJay defense that continues to be one of the tops in large school football.
The defense has allowed just two scores this season in 16 quarters of play for an average of 3.5 points a game. Guthrie is allowing 26 yards on the ground and 82 through the air.
