World’s largest road trip makes unexpected visit to Guthrie; traffic backed up throughout town

The world’s largest road trip featuring thousands of cars rolled through Guthrie on Thursday morning, unexpectedly.

The Hot Rod Power Tour 2016 is the 22nd running of the world’s largest road trip featuring thousands of cars from all over America and beyond. This year, the event hits seven cities, starting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and ending in Kansas City, Missouri.

The car show made a pit stop in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night and will be rolling into Wichita, Kansas on Thursday. In the middle of that portion of the trip, the show rolled through the streets of Guthrie.

Without knowing of the incoming visitors, traffic along S. Division became a parking lot ranging from Harrison Ave. to Prairie Grove Road, which is approximately 2.5 miles.

The bumper-to-bumper traffic forced the Guthrie Police Department to patrol intersections to help aid the traffic through town. Police patrol the busy street for about an hour.

However, the surprise show allowed several to pull into a parking lot and watch the show go by. Many were seen outside their homes and work enjoying the cars drive by.

This is cool. Sitting at the office and I get to see all the old cars!” one person said in a Guthrie News Page Facebook post.

Another comment read, “Love it They are coming straight by my house. Front row seats.”

Many of the hot rod’s were seen at Guthrie car washes, restaurants and fuel stations.

That was the coolest ride to work ever. What a parade of awesome cars,” Lori Swanson said.
