The Guthrie Lady Jays basketball squad had the Deer Creek Antlers exactly where they wanted them in the final moments of their area tournament do-or-die game, but the Antlers had the final say inside the Norman North gymnasium.

With the score tied at 38-all and 12 seconds remaining, Guthrie had the ball for perhaps the final shot, but after a miss Deer Creek was fouled in the back court with just .36 of a second remaining. Deer Creek connected on one-of-two free throw’s to pull out the 39-38 win to advance to Saturday’s area final.

During the regular season, each team had won in their opponents home gym.

The Lady Jays finish their season with a 13-11 record.

Both teams started off slow and were tied after the first quarter. Deer Creek opened the game with a 12-4 run in the second quarter to take a 19-11 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Guthrie responded. The Lady Jays responded by outscoring Deer Creek 13-9 and pulled within four, 28-24. Both teams stayed even midway through the fourth quarter with Deer Creek holding a 36-33 lead with 3:44 left in the game.

The Lady Antlers added two more points to take a 38-33 lead into the final 2:08, but Guthrie went on a 5-0 run in the next 1:04 to tie the game at 38-all with 58 seconds left.

Guthrie had one final shot to win it, but came up short to finish the season.
