After starting the season 0-2, the Guthrie baseball squad has won three straight games and have done it with their bats.
The latest win came on the opening day of the two-pool Ardmore Spring Break Tournament, Thursday afternoon, with a 24-0 rout of Santa Fe South in a four inning run-rule shorten game. Sophomore pitcher Cody Reihs collected his first varsity win.
On Thursday, Guthrie scratched eight runs in the second inning and followed that with 12 more in the third to put the game away as 11 BlueJays collected a hit on the day. Before the on-slaught of runs, junior first baseman Hayden Seifert gave the Jays a 1-0 lead in the first with a single to score fellow junior Scott Pickle.
That was more than enough offense for Reihs on the bump. He finished by throwing three innings allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters. Adam Beery came in to throw the final inning and struck two of the four hitters he faced out.
In the second inning, the Jays took advantage of four free passes, but picked up three hits including two doubles from Bryan Dutton and Dusty Cotton. Dutton’s cleared the bases for three RBIs and Cotton’s was good for two RBIs.
In the third inning, Guthrie’s first seven batters reached on base with Pickle’s two RBI triple, Seifert’s double, and Landry Chappell’s two RBI double. The highlight of the inning came on Kye Sears grand slam for his first varsity slam.
