Bluejays dig the long ball; Guthrie run-rules Noble for district sweep

For the second straight day, the Guthrie High School baseball team found themselves trailing Noble 2-0. The Bluejays responded on Tuesday by scoring 12-unanswered runs to earn a five inning run-rule victory inside Squires Field.

Noble jumped out of the gates with two runs in their first at bat. Afterwards, Guthrie’s Zane Maltz was able to keep the Bears away from plating another run to pick up his fifth win on the year.

Senior Camden Wilcott, Braden Davenport all went big fly in the game, including a fourth inning grand slam from Davis to give the Jays the 10-run differential, 12-2, to shorten the game to four-and-half innings.

Wilcott got everything going when he led the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff homerun over the blue left field fence for his first round tripper of the season.

Davenport torched a Noble pitch into the football stands for one of the longest homeruns in recent time as it traveled over 400 feet. The senior shortstop now has two homers on the season.

With the grand slam, Davis finished 2-3 at the plate with six RBI’s.

Maltz (5-0) needed 83 pitches for the victory on the hill. The right-hander held the Bears to four hits while striking out six.

Guthrie (13-2) moves into second place in district play with a 5-1 record. The Jays now hold tie-breakers over Piedmont (5-1) and Noble (6-2). Shawnee remains perfect in the district at 6-0 with Guthrie, Piedmont and Noble remaining on the schedule.

The Bluejays have now won five straight games, which currently marks their second longest streak (6 games) on the year.

The Jays will be tested in the Choctaw/Carl Albert Tournament beginning on Thursday with Carl Albert at 10 a.m. and Ponca City at 12:15 p.m. Both games will be at Carl Albert. On Friday, Guthrie plays Moore at 12:15 p.m. and Edmond Santa Fe at 7 p.m. with both games at Carl Albert.

All games will be carried live on Guthrie Sports Page.
