Perhaps a good preview of the Class 5A golf regional was on display Friday morning at Cedar Valley’s Augusta course.
After battling wintery cool conditions over the last week, the 5A golfers enjoyed blue skies and light winds as 11 teams and 64 players took part in the Guthrie 5A Preview. A good portion of the teams will return to the course for the May 2nd west regional.
“We had a great turn out with some good teams,” head coach Ric Meshew said. “I think the players and coaches really enjoyed what the course had to offer today.”
Ardmore, who are perhaps the favorites to win the team title come May 10th when they host the state tournament at Dornick HIlls, took the overall team title by 24 shots with a score of 292. Both Deer Creek and Duncan finished with a score of 316, Chickasha (320) was fourth overall, and the Jays finished with a score of 327.
Ardmore’s Cash Campbell was the only player to score under par with a 69 by shooting a 34 on the front nine and even par on the back nine. Defending 5A state champion, Taylor Williams, of Chickasha, carded a 71 for second. Ardmore’s Andrew Riesen finished third with a two over 72.
For Guthrie they were paced by their No. 1 player Jack Klein, who shot a 39 and 36 for a score of 75. Klein tied for seventh overall with Carl Albert’s Kauton Vaverka and Duncan’s Tyler Morrow.
Guthrie’s left hander Brent Jenkins scored a 44 on the front nine, but shot a very respectable 37 on the back nine holes for an 81. Freshmen Brayden Berryman scored an 85, Austin McCaul 86, Ethan Delno an 87, and both Bryce Sullivan and Caleb Davis turned in rounds of 92.
The Jays will travel to Enid, on Monday to play the Meadlowlake golf course and then The Territory course in Duncan.
