It was an intense two days at the Class 5A West Regional and a good weekend for the Guthrie Bluejays, who will send nine wrestlers to this week’s State Championships in Oklahoma City. The Jays finished the regional as a team in a third place tie.

Headlining the weekend for the Jays was Alex Fields by winning the regional championship at 113 pounds. Now, 33-3 on the year, Fields took advantage of a bye, two quick falls and an decisive 8-2 win in the championship.

Fields, who qualifies for state for the first time, will be the top seed at state.

Caleb Nelson and Kurgan Cornwell also advanced to the reigonal championship, but fell short in highly competitive finals. Cornwell (33-6) dropped a 3-2 ultimate tie breaker in the 138 finals, while Nelson (28-10) dropped an 11-8 tie breaker.

Both will be two seeds at state.

Cornwell qualifies for the state tournament for the third time and Nelson making his second state appearance.

Despite only 12 matches this season, Bryndun Herendeen (7-5) captured third place in the 106 pound division. The freshmen easily controlled three of his four matches with a fall, tech fall and major decision.

In the big weights, Dane Jenkins and JB Simpson punched their ticket to the state tournament by winning their final match and finishing with third place finishes.

In the 220 pound division, Jenkins won three of his four matches, including two wins over his Del City opponent.

Jenkins (25-7) will be making his third state tournament appearance.

At 285, Simpson (33-12) collected a fall in his first match and suffered a fall himself in the next round. However, the senior, who easily leads the team in falls, rallied to win his final two matches with falls.

Simpson, who was an alternate last year, qualifies for his first state championship.

Freshmen Dean Madison, 132 pounds, and Junior Michael Miller, 152 pounds, each finished with fourth place finishes.

Madison (20-9) and Miller both captured three wins in five matches.

Miller in just his second year wrestling will enter State with a 34-11 record.

Senior Allen Tomlinson qualified with a fifth place finish despite dropping his first match. After that, Tomlinson (22-6) won four out the last five to qualify. Tomlinson will compete at 9:30 a.m. in the wrestle-in round. With a win, he would move on to the first round.

The state tournament will start with a weigh-in at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. After the wrestle-in matches (4 seeds vs 5 seeds) 224 first round matches on eight mats will begin at 11 a.m.
