Chappell collects 500th coaching win against McGuinness

Talk to head baseball coach Jon Chappell and he will tell you the district win was much, much more important than winning his 500th game as the coach of the BlueJays.

Chappell and the Jays stayed perfect in district play (6-0) with 11-3 and 5-1 wins over the 13th ranked Irish.

Guthrie used back-to-back home run shots from John Clark and Donovan Jordan to open the game with six runs in the fourth inning on Monday afternoon inside Squire Field. The inning was started by another home run off the bat of senior Hayden Seifert.

After Tuesday’s game was pushed back to Wednesday due to rain, the Jays scored all five runs in the middle innings (4th and 5th) after the Irish jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

The BlueJays 1-2 punch on the mound of Bryan Dutton and Reed Roberts collected wins.

Chappell’s 500th win comes in his 21st season at Guthrie. The Hall of Fame and Guthrie graduate thus far has averaged over 23 wins a season.
