The high school season started off a bang for Bryan Dutton and Landry Chappell, then it was highlighted in the middle of the season and it finished on a high note.
Bryan Dutton and Landry Chappell had a special season for Guthrie High School in 2010-2011.
Both Dutton and Chappell have been named to the first team of The Oklahoman’s Big All-City team. In addition, Dutton was named as a reserve to the state’s largest newspaper’s All-State team while Chappell was named as an honorable mention player.
Deer Creek’s Michael Fulmer was named the All-CIty Player of the Year and his head coach Ron Moore was named Coach of the Year. The All-State Player of the Year award went to Broken Arrow’s Archie Bradley, who is expected to be drafted high in next week’s Major League Baseball draft. Roff head coach Ead Simon was the All-State Coach of the Year.
Both Guthrie star athletes helped lead the Jays baseball team to the state tournament for the first time since 2005.
Dutton, a sophomore, led the team in hits (57), runs (56) and home runs (12). The sophomore batted .460 and drove in 54 RBIs.
Chappell, a junior, proved to be vital not only behind the plate, but in the field and on the mound in the season that saw the Jays finish with a 27-13 record. Chappell led the team in doubles (19), RBIs (55), and batting average (.478). Chappell also connected for nine round trippers.
The duo was just recently named to the sophomore and junior Sunbelt Classic teams.
Both excelled on the football field in helping Guthrie reached the state semi’s for the second straight season. Dutton set Guthrie High School passing records and Chappell was second in 5A in tackles and among the top in the state.
They each won state championships in wrestling this past February. It was the first time Guthrie Wrestling had have a state champion since 1992.
