It was a scoring fest on the last day of the four-day Choctaw baseball tournament on Saturday afternoon as the Guthrie BlueJays played for the sixth straight day. Not to mention 9 games in 9 days for the young Jays squad.
Guthrie dropped a 15-12 decision to the 6A Choctaw Yellowjackets to finish fourth overall. The Stillwater Pioneers, who defeated Guthrie on day one, took the tournament championship with a 15-9 win over Sand Springs. In the consolation game, the OKC Broncos out slugged Carl Albert 16-15.
In total, 82 runs were scored in the three games on Saturday, in which, is not too surprising as pitching staff’s were tested to the limit.
Taking advantage at the plate was Guthrie junior John Clark, who finished 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in a losing cause. Clark now has three round trippers on the year and just lacked a triple for the cycle.
Scott Pickle, Hayden Seifert, and Jacob Chappell each finished with two hits each.
Hunter Gates (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound in two innings of work. Chappell finished the last four innings in just his third appearance of the year. The freshmen held the 6A Jackets to just four hits and four runs. Only two of the four runs were earned.
Guthrie is now 0-3 against 6A clubs (Ponca City, Stillwater and Choctaw) as they get back into conference action when they take on Piedmont on Monday and Tuesday.
