It’s still unknown if Charter Oak Elementary School will be ready for school children come next August. Earlier this month, the Guthrie Board of Education approved next year’s school calendar, but have an approved second calendar on standby.
Last October, school board members learned the new elementary school in southern Logan County was behind schedule for completion. Construction contractor, Charles Wash with W.L. McNatt, said between a wet summer and a surveyor issue they lost over 50 days of construction time. Related article: New elementary school behind construction schedule
Cold temperatures continue to hamper construction progress and is leaving school officials in limbo for an approximate opening date.
The BOE approved next years school calendar, which is similar to this years calendar, in hopes the building will be ready for classes and to help families plan vacations and events.
The first day of school is set for Aug. 17 and the last day of school for May 24. View the approved school calendar for 2018-19.
If Charter Oak is unable to open by August, Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson says a second calendar, which has been approved by the calendar committee, could be utilized and start school after Labor Day (Sept. 3).
Simpson mentioned the second option would reduce the number of days taught in order to finish before Memorial Day.
“When you get all the factors involved you have very little wiggle room on a lot of things unless you start making drastic changes like we have with the other (calendar) option,” Simpson told board members.
Simpson added if the second calendar option was implemented the breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring, etc.) would not change drastically.
The superintendent reminded board members the school calendar can be altered at any time throughout the year.
