Community invited to celebrate Ric Meshew’s retirement after 38 years at Guthrie Public Schools

The Guthrie community will have an opportunity to celebrate one of the most accomplished coaches and educators in school history as a retirement meet and greet honoring Ric Meshew is scheduled for Aug. 4.

The event will be held at the Guthrie Golf & Country Club from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Former athletes, teachers, coaches, and community members are invited to attend and help recognize Meshew’s 38 years of service to Guthrie Public Schools.

Meshew recently retired after a career that spanned nearly four decades and left a lasting impact on thousands of students and athletes.

In a retirement message shared with the community, Meshew reflected on his time at Guthrie, including 6,500 school days, more than 500 golf tournaments, over 450 football games, countless miles traveled, and the many relationships built along the way.

“SO MANY GREAT KIDS AND FAMILIES…what a blessing,” Meshew wrote. “All glory to God for the blessing and to my wife Gayla for all of it.”

Throughout his career, Meshew became one of the most successful coaches in Guthrie High School history.

As head coach of the Guthrie High School boys golf program, Meshew guided the Bluejays to four state championships, winning titles in 1992, 1998, 2018, and 2019. His teams also finished as state runners-up three times, and his 2020 team was considered a favorite to win a third consecutive championship before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, Meshew received another prestigious honor when he was inducted into the Oklahoma Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class.

The induction added to a career already filled with accomplishments. Meshew was inducted into the Guthrie High School Hall of Fame in 2017 and was named the 2017-18 Oklahoma Boys Golf Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

His contributions extended beyond golf. Meshew served as an assistant coach on Guthrie’s 1989 state championship baseball team and has been part of all four Bluejay football state championship teams.

During his Hall of Fame induction ceremony, several former student-athletes attended to honor the coach who helped shape generations of Guthrie athletes.

Beyond coaching, Meshew has also been a familiar face in Oklahoma athletics through his work officiating basketball and volleyball.

After nearly four decades of teaching, coaching, mentoring, and supporting students, the Aug. 4 gathering will provide an opportunity for the community to thank Meshew for his dedication and celebrate the legacy he leaves behind.
