County deputy goes beyond the call of duty

The Guthrie Police Department has had a busy week with extra patrol of school buildings following an arrest of a high school student who made threats to other students. However, they have received some help from a familiar face to Guthrie and Logan County residents.

Deputy Curtis Stewart, who will celebrate 12 years at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office in February, has lent a helping hand by patrolling and watching over Guthrie Junior High this week. Certainly does not sound unusual, but the deputy is doing it on his own time.

Stewart, a life-ling Guthrie resident, works the 4 p.m. to midnight shift at County, but has been putting the uniform on hours before going on duty to not only help the Guthrie Police Department, but to make sure students and their families are safe during this week where parents are cautious of sending their children to school.

GPD has set up officers at each of the school buildings throughout the school day, including some officers from the over night shift staying on duty to help out.

Stewart approached Guthrie Police Chief Damon Devereaux with the suggestion and Devereaux quickly accepted.

“We are thankful for him,” Devereaux said.

Stewart, who was modest about the attention, said he is doing to be helpful and for the safety of everyone.

“Damon has helped me in the past with training and this is one way of paying him back for what he gave me,” Stewart said.

“I have children as well and know the feeling of parents wanting their children to be safe at school,” Stewart went on to say.

A male student at Guthrie High School was suspended and later arrested after students accused him of making threats at school on Dec. 14.

The high school will have even more of a presence of law enforcement at the school on Friday.

It is safe to say Stewart will be in uniform, once again, giving parents, students and citizens a safe feeling in what has been a scary week for most.

  1. This is very commendable act of dedicated service by Deputy Steward to Guthrie Junior High School. I know the families really appreciated it after the mass shooting of innocent sweet children at the Conneticut School.

  2. A very dedicated Deputy … Thank You!
