After facing a chance of life in prison, a Guthrie man accepted a guilty plea to second degree murder and has given up his right for a jury trial.

William David Evans Jr., 31, was originally charged with aggravated assault and battery after reportedly assaulting Douglas Cline, 53, at his home, 12151 S Bryant Lane, on December 30, 2010. However, due to head and body trauma, Cline died on New Years Day at a hospital changing the charge to murder.

Evans originally pleaded not guilty in July 2011 to first degree murder and was expected to go to trial in March 2013, but on October 5 accepted the lesser charge.
Evans was sentenced to 45 years with the Department of Corrections with the last 20 years suspended upon good behavior. He will receive credit for time serve. With the lesser charge, Evans faced a minimum of 20 years to life in prison.
Evans told a detective that he did not realize he had hit Cline that hard or often, but knew he had knocked him out. Evans reportedly came back to the house to check up on Cline and saw he was still unconscious. Evans told a detective he had cleaned him up and put a pillow under his head before leaving again.
