Faver students honor Oklahoma’s history with 89er window art

As Guthrie gears up for the 96th annual 89er Celebration, students at Faver Alternative School are embracing the 2025 theme, “Landrun to Statehood,” through creative and educational window displays.

Inspired by the pivotal moments that shaped Oklahoma’s past, the students dove into the rich history of the Land Run era. To their surprise, they learned that there were not just one, but seven land runs between 1889 and 1895. While many were already familiar with Oklahoma’s First Public School, established in 1889 and located in nearby Edmond, the deeper dive into local history revealed even more to appreciate right in their own hometown.

Through research and reflection, Faver students discovered that Guthrie was not only the First Capital of Oklahoma Territory, but also briefly served as the first state capital when Oklahoma officially gained statehood. They also learned about the city’s first post office and other key landmarks, all of which helped shape the artistic direction of their window displays.

These decorations are now proudly displayed, celebrating Guthrie’s vital role in Oklahoma’s journey from land runs to statehood, just in time for the 89er festivities.
