Flames and smoke overtake house; four without a home

Four people are without a home Sunday evening following a large fire that completely destroyed a home. A nearby neighbor saw the smoke and flames and helped rescue one person and an animal from the structure.

Fire departments throughout Logan County were dispatched to the 100 block of Huntington Ave., which is located to the north of the Guthrie Golf & Country Club on Highway 105. The heavy, black smoke could be seen miles away.

The call came in at 6:33 p.m. with the biggest flames finally extinguished at 9:30 p.m. Fire crews remained on scene throughout the early morning hours putting out hot spots.

Firefighters with the Guthrie Fire Department arrived to the home with smoke and flames coming from the west side of the home. It’s uncertain what caused the blaze, or exactly where, but it made its way to the attic and quickly spread throughout the home.

The west side of the home belonged to the homeowner while the east side of the home belong to two tenants.

A neighbor across the street spotted the smoke and flames and busted their way through the front door and notified one of the tenants, which along with the family pet, were able to escape.

The homeowner received the horrific news while at a Bible study, while a tenant learned of the blaze after arriving to work.

Several fire engines and tankers were needed with poor water pressure from a nearby fire hydrant. Tankers were forced to go to a fire hydrant a mile away to refill and return back to the scene.

Highway 105 was shut down for several hours to allow firefighters to work.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.
