Senior Night is always a time to remember. It is also a game in which you want to win. Senior Hunter Gates was able to accomplish both as the only senior member on the BlueJay baseball team.
Gates and the sixth ranked BlueJay squad earned their 22nd win of the season with an afternoon 9-1 win against 6A’s U.S. Grant in a run-rule five inning game. The win marks the second against the Generals this season and the 15th run-rule this season. View photo gallery.
Gates, who was joined with student trainer Amber Coffman as the only two senior members, pitched all five innings and did not allow an earned run. In addition, he struck out five Generals, allowed three walks, and faced just 21 batters in the game. Gates is now 3-2 on the season.
The Jays jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead when they got a ground out RBI from Scott Pickle, who brought home Luke Davis. Bryan Dutton and Landry Chappell collected hits in the first at bat, but were left stranded.
Guthrie opened the game when they brought home eight runs as 12 Jays came to bat. The highlight came when John Clark, who started the inning with a single, lined a shot over the left field wall for the 2-run shot. His teammates rewarded him with the silent treatment inside the dugout. For Clark, he now is tied for second best on the team with five round trippers.
Hayden Seifert’s double was the only other hit for the Jays in the second when they took advantage of three walks, a balk, and three errors.
The Jays will conclude the regular season Thursday with a trip to Ponca City. First pitch is set for 4:30.
