GHS students raise over $8,000 for Huskey family during Pink Week

In an assembly on Monday at Guthrie High School, students gave $8,072 to the family of Maria Huskey as part of a fundraising campaign to help make awareness for cancer patients for Pink Week.

In just over 10 days of raising funds, GHS students set a goal of reaching $5,000 and were able to go beyond the wishful amount.

Maria Huskey lost her battle with cancer on Sept. 2.

Surrounded by balloons, banners, students and faculty members, the Huskey family accepted the donation at center court of the gymnasium. The donation will help offset medical bills and funeral expenses.

Maria, who has two siblings in the Guthrie school district, was a Children’s Leader at her church and volunteered for Noble Ministries. She enjoyed art, painting, dancing, music, movies, going to the beach, crocheting and loved being around children.

“I received a call of thanks from her grandmother for all the efforts from our students and staff,” Supt. Dr. Mike Simpson said.
