GHS volleyball plays their first-ever home match

The scoreboard may have read one thing and the disappointment in the athlete’s faces showed the same outcome, but Guthrie High School volleyball has arrived in the state’s first capital.

In front of a packed North Gymnasium at the high school, the first official serve was delivered on Tuesday evening as the Lady Jays took on the Oklahoma City Knights.

It was quite the site. Chairs were needed as the bleachers quickly became full. The fresh new look of volleyballs and net was almost as nice as the brand-new jerseys.

The Jays stormed out by winning the first two sets of the night (25-21 and 25-18) only to see the Knights rally to win three straight sets (18-25, 23-25 and 12-15) for the win.

For the first week of the first-ever season, the Lady Jays are fun to watch, and will only improve over time.

The Junior High gymnasium will someday be able to host volleyball matches. When the gym was constructed way back when it was not built to hold up the net structure. One day soon it will.

The main gymnasium will be utilized one day as well. When the floor was revamped a few years back, volleyball was only being discussed as a possibility so volleyball lines were not put down.

Now, volleyball is here in Guthrie.

Next up is the Putnam City North tournament on Aug. 28.

Eighth Grade Team Remains Undefeated

After every match, the team takes a team photo, and so far, they have all been with smiling faces.

5-0 will do that.

The Lady Jays handled the OKC Knights before the high school took the court 25-14 and 25-9.

With the latest win over OKC, the Jays have collected wins over Piedmont, El Reno, and Del City twice.

The junior high teams (seventh and eighth grade) will next be in action on Thursday when they host Noble beginning at 4:30 p.m.
