For the first time in program history, the Guthrie Lady Jays soccer team will be playing in the second round of the playoffs. An early second half goal would be all that was needed for the Jays.
Guthrie (8-3) traveled to Oklahoma City and took on District Two champion Santa Fe South (SFS), who entered with an impressive 11-3 record and a five game winning streak.
Guthrie, now winners of seven straight, had no idea what to expect from their opponents. Head Coach Monte Myers decided to change the defensive lineup for the first round playoff game. The first half did not have many attempts on goal as both teams battled in midfield to maintain possession.
The game remained scoreless at halftime and it wasn’t until two minutes into the second half when Mikayla Williams passed the ball to Emma Taylor, who received the ball on top of the box, and shot it to the bottom left corner to break the scoreless tie.
Toward the end of the contest, SFS had a couple of shots on the Guthrie’s keeper Elyssa Damron, but was able to keep a clean sheet.
When the final whistle blew, this year’s team became the first team to win a playoff game for Guthrie soccer and leaving the head coach satisfied with the performance.
“They worked hard. I was happy with the effort.”
Guthrie will be rewarded with a home playoff game on Friday when they host Noble. The game will be a rematch from March 26 when Guthrie came away with the slim, 4-3, overtime win.
“I expect them to show up and play hard,” Myers said of his second round opponent.
Junior captain Mercy Dement said they have to keep their heads straight.
“We can’t go in cocky because we beat them in overtime.”
The quarterfinal game is set for 7:30 p.m.
