Albert Hawkes, Commander, American Legion Lebron Post 58, presents a Governor’s proclamation to Guthrie Mayor, Chuck Burtcher at a recent Guthrie City Council meeting.

Commander Albert Hawkes (L), Lebron Post 58 presents a Governor’s Proclamation to Mayor Chuck Burtcher.

The proclamation reflects the historic land run of 1889 and salutes the “courageous deeds and determination of faith that guided those early day settlers as they built the firm foundation for future Oklahomans”.  The proclamation further states “the Oklahoma Legislature has declared that the historic city of Guthrie shall be the official city of celebration” for this 89er Celebration Week.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Heroes of Service” and provides an opportunity to honor members of the military, the police, and firefighters.  89er Celebration Week officially begins Tuesday, April 17th with the annual Chuckwagon Feast and Western Art Auction.  The Feast begins at 5pm at the Logan County Fairgrounds with great food, terrific entertainment and both a live auction and a silent auction.

Wednesday brings in the carnival and over 60 craft and food vendors including rock climbing walls and mechanical bull riding. Thursday at 6:30 presents the always entertaining “Old Timer” baseball game at Squires Field.

Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 pm finds a wonderful family friendly rodeo at the Fairgrounds arena, with a special concert kicking off the Saturday night activity.

Of course, the largest parade in Oklahoma begins at noon on Saturday, April 21st, with special guests, floats and bands, all recognizing “Heroes of Service”.  Additional information may be found on the web site www.89erdays.com.
