Guthrie Football makes first good impression in scrimmage

With only one scrimmage on the schedule, the Guthrie High School football team needs to be clicking on all cylinders. On Friday evening, the Jays appeared to be ready for the Friday night lights.

In their annual scrimmage with Douglass and Bishop Kelley at Langston University, the Bluejays defense showed signs of tremendous defense. In 24 total plays, the defense kept the Trojans and Comets for a combined 24 yards.

Douglass manage to complete just one pass in four attempts. On the ground, their biggest run was just five yards.

The Jays defense against Kelley collected three straight sacks with Troy Branson, Dominque Goosby and Brayden Stone wrapping the quarterback up. The Comets managed only three plays resulting in positive yards and finished with just seven total.

The Jays offense, which was led by sophomore quarterback Jackson Waddell, needed 9 plays to score on their first offensive set against Kelley. The rushing game got going early with 38 yards on the first four plays behind Ty Doolin, including 16 yards on the first play of the night. On the eighth play from scrimmage, Waddell hit receiver Marcellous Owens with a 28-yard pass and catch inside the 10-yard line. Next play, it was Doolin running on the right side of the offensive line and into the end zone from 6-yards out.

Guthrie was unable to score in their 12 plays against Douglass, but Waddell managed to go 4-5 through the air for 14 yards.

The Bluejays begin the 2016 season on Friday when they host Class 6A II Enid. The kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard on 93.7 FM, Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page beginning at 6:30 with the pregame show.
