Guthrie JROTC takes in Vietnam Veterans Day

The National Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony was Tuesday at the Oklahoma History Center in OKC. This years speakers were Secretary of Military Affairs John Nash, President of the Vietnamese Community of OKC Michael Do, and Captain Bob Ford who was a UH-1 helicopter pilot in Vietnam and the author of “Black Cat 2-1: The True Story of a Vietnam Helicopter Pilot and his Crew”

Senior Cadets Jonathan Clutter, Taylor Goddard, Conrad Kraft and Madalyn Wells along with Junior Cadets Aidin Edmondson and Brandon Willis honored these great Americans who sacrificed a part of their youth to answer their nation’s call to service. They were able to spend time with Captain Ford, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Mike Sloniker and Colonel (Retired) Chuck DeBellevue.

Below, they are with Captain Bob Ford (green fatigues). Bob flew more than 1,000 combat missions in Vietnam from 1967-1968. Mr. Ford is the Executive Vice President of Shawnee Milling Company. The cadets are also pictured with Lieutenant Colonel Mike Sloniker (center) and Colonel Chuck DeBellevue. Mike earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and 27 Air Medals with Valor during his two tours in Vietnam. Chuck is the Air Forces’ leading MiG Ace with 6 confirmed aerial victories over North Vietnam. He earned the Air Force Cross, 3 Silver Stars, and 6 Distinguished Flying Crosses. Great Americans with our future Great Americans!
