All cities have their issues when it comes to crime, but according to a real estate brokerage site, Guthrie ranks among the top 10 safest places in Oklahoma to live.

GuthrieMovoto Real Estate, an online real estate brokerage based in San Mateo, CA., researched Oklahoma towns with a population of 10,000 or more and used the FBI’s 2012 Uniform Crime Report for their crime data. After their research, 40 towns were researched into more depth.

Guthrie made the final list at No. 6. Researchers show Guthrie in 2012 having 3,171 crimes per 100,000 people. Of those, there were 3,017 property crimes and just 154 violent crimes, ranking it sixth in this category. Those violent crimes included 19 robberies, 29 rapes, 106 assaults and no murders per 100,000.

“The safety of our community starts with our citizens,” 10-year Police Chief Damon Devereaux said. “They are our eyes and ears in the neighborhoods that keep us informed of suspicious activity. They assist us on a daily basis to help keep our community safe.”

Guthrie City Manager Sereniah Breland also attributed the success through the citizens, but was quick to point out those who serve to protect for quality of life in Guthrie.

“In addition to our caring residents, our safety statistics are attributable to the hard work of the men and women of law enforcement and the relationships they have fostered in the community,” Brleand said.

“We are cognizant of our residents cooperative attitude and we are proud and privileged to serve them,” Breland concluded with.

Researchers categorized their crimes into four categories: murders, violent crimes, property crimes and total crimes. To compare larger cities to smaller cities equally, the rates were based on crimes per 100,000 residents.

The rankings were then weighted so that murders, violent crimes (rape, robbery), and property crimes (theft, vehicle theft) each counted more heavily (they made up 30 percent of the overall score) and the total number of crimes accounted for a smaller portion of the final score (10 percent). The final step was to average these weighted rankings into a Big Deal Score, with the lowest score being the safest place.

“Six is good but we strive for number one,” Devereaux said.
