Guthrie Volleyball splits home matches against Newcastle and Blanchard

Head Coach Rachael Gibson talks to her team during a timeout inside the Guthrie Junior High gymnasium.

The Guthrie Lady Jays opened their home portion of the 2026 volleyball schedule this week, splitting a pair of matches against Newcastle and Blanchard.

Guthrie hosted Newcastle on Tuesday, with the match moved from Guthrie High School to the Guthrie Junior High School gymnasium because of the air conditioning issue at the high school that caused classes to be canceled.

Newcastle, a Class 5A opponent, took the opening set 25-20. The Lady Jays responded in the second set with a strong comeback.

Guthrie trailed 22-17 before rallying for eight consecutive points to take the set 25-22.

The Lady Jays carried the momentum into the next two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-18 to take the match in four sets.

On Thursday, Guthrie faced Blanchard, a Class 4A opponent, and the match took a different turn.

The Lady Jays won the first two sets before Blanchard rallied to win the final three and take the match.

The opening set featured several momentum swings.

Blanchard jumped out to a 12-7 lead before Guthrie head coach Rachael Gibson called a timeout. The Lady Jays responded with an 8-2 run to take a 15-14 advantage before eventually winning the set 25-23.

Guthrie followed with a 25-21 victory in the second set to take a 2-0 lead and move within one set of the match victory.

Blanchard, however, battled back and outscored Guthrie 65-47 over the final three sets. The Lady Jays dropped the third set 25-20, the fourth 25-15 and the deciding fifth set 15-12.

Guthrie is now 2-4 on the season.

The Lady Jays opened the season at the Midwest City Tournament, dropping matches to Class 6A Mustang and Class 5A opponents Classen SAS and Midwest City. Guthrie’s win at the tournament came against Class 5A Lawton, defeating the Wolverines 2-0.

Guthrie returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Carl Albert Tournament.
