The Guthrie Police Department is reminding drivers about the dangers and consequences of reckless driving, particularly as students return to school.
Police recently cited a driver for reckless driving after the vehicle was observed traveling in excess of 120 mph while other traffic was present.
The department said reckless driving occurs when someone operates a vehicle in a careless or wanton manner without regard for the safety of people or property.
Police noted that reckless driving does not necessarily involve excessive speed. Other examples can include carelessly passing a school bus with its red lights activated, racing another driver or performing a burnout in a parking lot.
Reckless driving carries a stiff fine and possible jail time, with the penalty doubled for second and subsequent offenses.
“Please remember reckless driving puts you, your passengers, and others in danger,” the department said.
With school back in session, Guthrie Police are encouraging everyone to be more vigilant and do their part to make driving throughout Guthrie safer.
